You might have heard Internet of Things (IoT) more often now as the increasingly growing attention towards it. Here’s what we gather helping you to understand briefly one of the most discussed topic.

What is IoT?

Just imagine the Internet of Things (IoT) as your brain that is connecting all the nerves in you, collecting your movements, sensory then tells you what to react, what’s your next move.

Well technically, IoT means the inter-networking via the computing devices, vehicles, buildings and items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data. It’s just that it’s a thing that allows objects to be sensed or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reduced human intervention.

It’s like a gigantic connection between human-human, human- things, things-things.

When was IoT started?

The term “Internet of Things” was coined by Peter T. Lewis in a 1985. In his speech he states that “The Internet of Things, or IoT, is the integration of people, processes and technology with connectable devices and sensors to enable remote monitoring, status, manipulation and evaluation of trends of such devices.” However, the term only became popular in 1999 by Kevin Ashton after seeing the Radio Frequency identification(RFID) as essential for the IoT at that point.

Why is it so important?

IoT can make all the electronic devices smart. It can gather data and leveraging it for business growth by measuring and evaluating them. The sector that IoT currently involved are buildings, energy, consumer & Home, Healthcare & life science, industrial, transportation, retail, security/public safety, IT & Networks. Basically each and every sector, as long as it’s connected to network , it can be related to IoT. Taking some examples like smarter traffic lights with IoT, the main purpose of such replacement is to optimize traffic management processes. It helps to reduce the idle time with its anti-idling system helping to adjust light cycle times more efficiently by the network information from the cars.

How does IoT impact you?

The Good – linking all the electronic devices in the world. Here’s one quick example.

The Bad – No really the bad but the concerns that many bring up when we discuss about IoT. The most talked-about are firstly the security then the data privacy. Next is when we are over-reliance to the technology and loss of jobs.

When it comes to security and data privacy, questions like who will control the Internet of Things? A single company? By the state government ? Where will be the information store and how safe are they? These are some questions that came about and still finding its way. This is the argument since the advancement of technology but is this the correct direction we should be heading to. The generations now are heavily rely on tech where they are making decisions by the the information by the tech could lead to devastation. People starting to live like a robot, work like a robot! We need to also look at areas where the no system is robust and fault-free. We see glitches that occur constantly in technology, specifically involving the internet.

With the growing number in technology, it will definitely bring pros and cons to each and everyone of us. Getting in line with advancement of technology will always be a never ending marathon.  We shall continue to review Internet of Things(IoT), the utmost topic in the tech world and review the benefits it brings to business and our life.
